Are radar detectors legal?

Radar detectors are legal across most of the United States, except in Virginia and Washington D.C. If you’re caught in Virginia, it’s a small ticket and no points. They used to confiscate your detector, but the law has been relaxed and they no longer do that. They simply write down your RD’s serial number instead. You can read the VA law here.

Radar detectors are also illegal on military bases, commercials trucks over 10,000 pounds, or any vehicle over 18,000 pounds no matter where you drive in the US.

Would you recommend a R3 for use in VA? Trying to find stealth radar detector for under 300

    1. Sure, that’d work well

Ok…. I’m just worried based on the test that Vortex ran and how they can be detected… I do have tint strip and would be mounting at the top of my windshield. In your opinion should I wait for Theia or buy an r3?

    1. The R3 is pretty stealth, if you even need that feature at all. Given the delays with Theia and the semiconductor shortages, I generally recommend picking up a detector now. Whenever Theia comes out, you can always upgrade then, plus you’ll have a ton of protection now in the meantime.
