The Odin 2.0 is their latest detector. It retails for $399. The original Odin and the Odin 2.0 share the same fundamental architecture, but the 2.0 claims improvements to laser detection and false alert filtering. My testing was done on the original Odin. None of those changes address the scrambling, POP detection, Spectre immunity, or radar performance issues documented in this review.

What Is the Odin 2.0?

The original Odin, released back in 2021, was the successor to the Rocky Mountain Radar Judge 2.0. Under the hood it had the same platform with the same performance and the same basic feature set. The main additions were a new gray case (compared to the Judge’s black), a USB-C power port instead of a barrel connector, and Bluetooth connectivity with a companion app. In late 2025, RMR released the Odin 2.0, advertising improvements to the laser array, lens, and processor, raising the price from $300 to $400.

RMR’s marketing pitch is that the Odin detects and “scrambles” police radar and laser guns, claiming it can prevent officers from getting your speed. Their own FAQ has since walked that back considerably. Let’s see how it holds up to testing.

Radar Scrambling

RMR’s original claim was that the Odin made your car invisible to police speed detection equipment. They’ve since quietly walked that back. Their FAQ now reads:

“The scrambler does not hide your speed from police radar, it does extend the time that it takes for police radar to display your speed.”

And on 360 degree scrambling coverage: “No, the scrambler is a forward scrambler.”

That’s a significant admission. They’re no longer claiming it hides your speed at all. Just that it might slow down the read slightly, and only from the front.

With the scrambling feature enabled, I tested the Odin against nine different radar guns (seven police-grade, two consumer-grade), targeting from both the front and rear.

The result: zero impact. Every gun acquired my speed immediately, exactly as if the Odin wasn’t there. No delay. No extended read time. Nothing.

There is no mechanism by which a passive device mounted on your windshield can affect how quickly a radar gun measures your speed. The physics don’t support even the weakened claim. The test results confirm it.

Laser Scrambling

Same story. Rocky Mountain Radar claims their “scramblers only allow the Lidar to see up to 100 feet, so it is unable to calculate your speed.” I tested with three police lidar guns (the LTI TruSpeed S, the Kustom ProLaser 4, and the LTI Ultralight LRB), with the Odin’s scrambling feature on and the detector mounted center-windshield as RMR recommends. I ran passes starting from 500 to 700 feet away to give the scrambler every possible chance to work.

Every gun locked on and held a speed reading with no issues, both front and rear. The Odin had zero effect on any of them.

RMR claims the scrambling works beyond 100 feet. My test course was well beyond that. It doesn’t matter. The result is the same.

POP Radar Detection

RMR claims the Odin gives you “a 100% probability of detecting POP Radar.” I tested against two POP-capable radar guns.

Detection rate: zero percent.

There’s no option in the detector to enable or disable POP detection, which is strange for any detector that claims to detect it. It just doesn’t alert. Not once.

For what it’s worth, POP detection isn’t particularly important in practice, and many enthusiasts turn POP detection off on detectors that support it. But RMR makes a specific “100%” claim. That claim is false.

Radar Detection Performance

So what about actual radar detection? Just doing the basic job of alerting you to a police radar gun up the road?

RMR confirmed the Odin runs the same platform as the Judge 2.0, so existing test data applies. @VariableWave on RDF did thorough range testing on the Judge 2.0:

• Ka 33.8: Bottom-of-the-barrel detections, front and rear
• Ka 34.7 (most common frequency): Last place
• Ka 35.5: Worst front detections, nearly nothing from the rear
• K band: Worst front detections, almost no rear detection
• X band: Worst front detections, zero rear detection

The performance is what you’d expect from a sub-$100 detector, not a $400 one.

False Alert Filtering

The Odin doesn’t have GPS, so there’s no low-speed muting, no GPS lockouts, no red light camera database. Those features are standard on competing detectors in this price range, and even on many detectors that cost significantly less.

In daily driving, the detector was quieter than I expected on K band, but that’s largely a function of the sensitivity being low in the first place. You can reduce sensitivity even further by switching to City mode, at which point the detector stops alerting to a door opener right in front of it. That’s not filtering. That’s just being deaf.

The bigger issue is Ka band false alerts.

I saw the Odin misreport K band signals as Ka band, repeatedly, from sources like Honda CRVs and Jeeps with blind spot monitoring. Ka alerts also appeared around speed signs, door openers, and occasionally from nothing I could identify at all. Ka band is the highest-priority alert for most drivers. Misreporting K band signals as Ka is a real problem.

Spectre RDD Immunity

RMR used to claim the Odin was “100% undetectable by the Spectre 3.” With my Spectre 3 on the windshield, I picked it up consistently from around 950 feet away. Consistent, repeatable detection.

I have noticed that for the Odin 2.0’s sales page, they say that it’s “designed to minimize detectable RF leakage” against the Spectre and explicitly still mention the Spectre III. The Odin is one of the most detectable detectors I’ve ever tested. An officer running a Spectre would have no trouble identifying a driver running one of these.

The App

⚠️ Update (2026): The Odin app appears to have been pulled from both the App Store and Google Play. RMR’s app page is now blank. The only RMR app still findable is a speedometer app last updated in 2015. The Bluetooth feature that was the Odin’s one differentiator from the Judge no longer has a working app to connect to.

The Odin’s main new addition over previous RMR detectors is Bluetooth and a companion app. I spent time testing it.

What the app actually does did:

• Lets you change settings on the detector from your phone (bands on/off, scrambling on/off, highway/city mode, display brightness)
• Shows a speedometer using your phone’s GPS
• Has a faded map in the background showing your location
• Displays a band icon when the detector alerts (K or Ka, no frequency, no signal strength)

What the app doesn’t do:

• GPS-based low-speed muting
• GPS lockouts
• Pre-built red light camera database (you can manually mark cameras, but alerts from those marks didn’t work reliably in my testing)
• Cloud alerts that actually function in real time (the app reported dots on a map the next day, not in-the-moment alerts)
• Firmware updates

The manual camera marking and cloud reporting features exist in the app but didn’t work reliably in my testing. The minimum time filter for crowd-sourced alerts is one day, so you’re seeing where officers were yesterday, not right now. There’s also no real alert display while driving. When the detector triggers, the app shows a band icon. No signal strength. No frequency. That’s it.

Ka Alert on the Odin with the App

The Bluetooth connection doesn’t maintain itself reliably either. Most times I got back in the car, I had to manually reconnect. For an app that doesn’t offer much while driving anyway, that’s hard to justify.

If you want crowd-sourced alerts and a red light camera database, just run Waze. Way more users, way more timely, pre-built database, actually works. The Odin app isn’t in the same league.

The app feels like it was built to check a feature box, not to provide actual value.

USB-C Power Port

One thing worth acknowledging: the Odin was the first radar detector to ship with a USB-C power port. Radenso has since done it too with the DS1. Credit where it’s due. This is a welcome direction for the industry. The included cable has a dual USB-A cigarette lighter plug, one for the detector and one for your phone. It’s power-only. No data connection, no firmware updates.

Bottom Line

The Odin is a low-end radar detector dressed up with marketing claims that don’t hold up to testing. The scrambling doesn’t work on radar or laser. POP detection doesn’t work. The Spectre immunity claim is false. Performance is at the bottom of the class. The app adds little.

The Odin 2.0 now sells for $400, up from $300 for the original. The value proposition got worse, not better.

Think about it this way: if any of this scrambling worked, I wouldn’t need the shelves of detectors behind me or thousands of dollars of the best laser jammers professionally installed in my car. I’d just mount this on the windshield, plug it in, and be done. If it worked, we enthusiasts and professionals who test this equipment would know. We’d all be running it.

It doesn’t work.

Best radar detectors under $300:

• Cobra RAD 700i ($259): Best pick under $300. Reasonable range, good BSM filtering, automatic GPS lockouts, Bluetooth, and cloud alerts.
• Escort Max 3 ($299): Nice features so tempting on paper, but Escort moved on to the Max 4 without fully fixing the platform. Real alerting concerns against certain Ka guns.
• Uniden DFR7 ($224): Budget fallback. Older and simpler, but solid performance against the most common Ka frequency.
• Whistler CR93 ($220): Recently revived by new ownership, but an outdated platform with no GPS lockouts. The DFR7 outperforms it for $4 more.

There’s a lot of junk in the radar detector market under $150. Poor range, excessive false alerts, and no GPS make cheap options more trouble than they’re worth. Once you get into the $200 to $300 range, that changes.

The recommendations at this tier have shifted recently. The Uniden R3 used to be the go-to $299 pick and the DFR7 the obvious choice under $200. Uniden has since raised prices on both, which reshuffled the recommendations. The detectors in this guide are where things stand now.

Cobra RAD 700i: Best Under $300

The RAD 700i ($259) is the first Cobra radar detector I’ve ever recommended in a best-of guide. That’s not a small thing. Cobra has historically made some of the worst detectors on the market: poor range, constant false alerts, cheap builds. That changed when Cobra and Escort came under the same parent company (Cedar Electronics) and started sharing technology. The RAD 700i benefits from that directly.

Pros

• Solid range for the price
• Effective BSM filtering, better than the R3
• Automatic GPS lockouts
• Speed-based sensitivity adjustments
• Photo radar detection (MRCD/MRCT)
• Bluetooth + Drive Smarter app
• Speed limit display on screen
• Still receiving firmware updates

Cons

• Less range than the Uniden R3, gap varies by terrain
• Slower to alert to instant-on vs. higher-end detectors
• Can struggle to properly escalate a Ka alert when already processing a BSM false
• Some Ka false alerts
• Drive Smarter app is clunky
• Annoying Bluetooth connect/disconnect chimes
• No remote mute button on power cable

Range: The R3 is more sensitive than the RAD 700i, and the gap varies a lot depending on terrain. In my test on a suburban course against 34.7 GHz (the most common Ka frequency in the US), the R3 came out about 10-12% ahead.

In more challenging terrain with hills, the gap can be much larger, given the R3’s added sensitivity can help it detect past terrain limitations the RAD 700i cannot. For most daily suburban driving the RAD 700i’s range is sufficient. If you do a lot of rural highway or hilly driving, the R3’s sensitivity advantage is a real reason to spend the extra $70.

False alert filtering: The standout strength at this price. The RAD 700i filters BSM false alerts more effectively than the Uniden R3. Automatic GPS lockouts learn stationary false alerts on their own after a few passes, and speed-based sensitivity adjustments keep it quieter around town without any manual input.

App integration: Bluetooth connects to the Drive Smarter app for cloud alert sharing with other Cobra and Escort users. The app also makes it easier to change settings and shows the current speed limit on screen, which is the more practically useful feature. Cloud alerts from other drivers are a bonus, but not a big deal. The app itself is clunky and has had connectivity issues, but it works.

There are more affordable Cobras like the RAD 480i ($149) and the RAD 450 ($129), but those sacrifice too much in terms of performance, filtering, and features in order to reach that pricepoint.

Bottom line: The RAD 700i is the right pick for most drivers under $300. Good filtering, automatic lockouts, Bluetooth, and solid range at $259. If you want to stretch the budget slightly for more range and better response time, the Uniden R3 at $329 is worth a look, but know you’re giving up automatic lockouts, Bluetooth, and app integration to get there.

Escort Max 3: Tempting on Paper ($299)

The Escort Max 3 launched at $399 in 2020. Escort has since released the Max 4 ($399) as its successor, put the Max 3 on the back burner, and dropped its price to $299. The feature list looks good at that price: good range that’s close to the Uniden R3, automatic GPS lockouts, Bluetooth, cloud alerts, and photo radar detection. The problem is understanding why the price dropped.

Escort released several updates to the Max 3, but moved on to developing and selling the Max 4 before fully addressing all the Max 3 limitations. There are documented alerting problems against certain Ka guns that remain unresolved. The Decatur Genesis II on 35.5 is one of the guns that has historically given Escort detectors issues, and the Max 3 has shown excessively slow reaction times, upwards of 25 seconds in some cases, which is unacceptably slow for any detector. Escort has worked on Genesis gun alerting in their higher-end detectors, but those fixes haven’t made it to the Max 3.

If these types of issues had been fixed, the Max 3 at $299 would be a genuinely strong recommendation. They haven’t been, and I think the price reflects that.

What’s been improved: Firmware 1.2 improved Auto mode K band sensitivity. Firmware 1.4 reduced Ka false alerts. Firmware 1.6 improved photo radar and laser jammer capabilities. The Max 3 is better than it was at launch, but some issues remain and Escort hasn’t prioritized fully addressing them.

Bottom line: If you already own a Max 3, keep it updated and it will serve you reasonably well in most conditions. If you’re buying new, the RAD 700i is the safer bet.

Uniden DFR7: Budget Option ($224)

Purchase the Uniden DFR7

The DFR7 was officially discontinued years ago, but Uniden keeps selling it. For years it was the top budget recommendation, especially as an under-$200 pick. Uniden raised the price to $224, which narrowed its appeal in my mind.

The DFR7 was released way back in 2016 and while its basic feature-set is fine, modern detectors have since added features like multicolor displays, automatic GPS lockouts, photo radar detector, and bluetooth functionality.

Pros

• Good performance for the price
• Solid against the most common Ka frequencies in the US
• GPS with manual lockouts
• Low speed muting
• Red light and speed camera alerts

Cons

• About ten years old, no longer receiving updates
• Single-color display
• No Bluetooth
• No automatic lockouts
• No cloud alerts
• No photo radar detection
• Only $35 less than the RAD 700i

Performance: The DFR7 performs well against 34.7 which is the most common Ka frequency used, but it struggles more against 33.8 and 35.5.

Updates: The DFR7 is a mature platform. Uniden’s last firmware update was released back in 2019, but they continue releasing GPS database updates for red light cameras and fixed speed cameras.

Bottom line: At $199 the DFR7 was easy to recommend as the under-$200 pick. At $224 it’s only $35 less than the RAD 700i, and that gap doesn’t justify giving up automatic lockouts, Bluetooth, photo radar detection, and a multicolor display. Find it on sale at a meaningful discount and it’s worth it. At current pricing, the RAD 700i is the better buy.

Whistler CR93: Not Worth It ($220)

Purchase the Whistler CR93

The Whistler CR93 is back. Whistler went out of business in late 2024 and was acquired by Goliad Products in early 2025, which has been reviving some of the old product lineup. The CR93 is one of them, available at $220.

It’s not worth considering.

The CR93 was already falling behind the competition when I tested it in 2017. It generates Ka false alerts, confuses K and Ka band, produces laser false alerts, and has no GPS lockouts. It’s also one of the most detectable detectors on the market, with essentially zero stealth capability. That matters if you drive in Virginia or want to minimize RDD exposure anywhere.

The one interesting feature is a pulse rate display for laser guns, which shows you what type of laser gun is targeting you. It’s interesting data, but not necessarily something you need in practice.

The engineer behind Whistler’s detectors, Mike Batten, is sadly no longer with the company. Goliad Products is reviving the brand, but not the talent who built the company. The CR97, which offered better K and Ka sensitivity, is no longer available. The filtering problems that plagued both detectors were never fixed.

Cons

• Ka false alerts, confuses K and Ka band
• Laser false alerts
• No GPS lockouts
• One of the most detectable detectors on the market
• Old platform, company engineering talent no longer involved
• Outperformed by the DFR7 on every meaningful metric, for essentially the same price

Bottom line: At $220, the Uniden DFR7 is $4 more and beats it on range, filtering, and adds GPS lockouts. There is no reason to choose the CR93.

How to Choose

Choose the Cobra RAD 700i ($259) for the best everyday detector under $300. Good range, automatic lockouts, Bluetooth, reasonable filtering. The straightforward pick for most drivers.

Consider the Escort Max 3 ($299) if you want automatic lockouts and cloud alerts and the RAD 700i is unavailable, but understand the Ka gun alerting limitations before relying on it.

Choose the Uniden DFR7 ($224) if you find it at a meaningful discount, or specifically need solid 34.7 performance at the lowest possible price.

Skip the Whistler CR93 ($220). The DFR7 outperforms it for $4 more and adds GPS lockouts. The CR93 is simply not competitive.

Want more range? The Uniden R3 at $329, or refurbished for $279, is the next step up. It used to be the default recommendation at this tier before Uniden raised the price from $299. It still offers the best detection range of the bunch and better response time. Just know you’re giving up automatic lockouts, Bluetooth, and app integration to get there. What is the best radar detector under $300?

The Cobra RAD 700i at $259 is the best radar detector under $300. It offers reasonable range, good BSM filtering, automatic GPS lockouts, Bluetooth, and cloud alerts. It benefits from shared technology with Escort under the same parent company, Cedar Electronics. The Uniden R3 used to hold this spot at $299, but Uniden raised the price to $329, pushing it out of this tier.

Is the Cobra RAD 700i better than the Uniden R3?

It depends on your priorities. The R3 is better suited for drivers who really prioritize long-distance detection in tricky terrain. The RAD 700i is the better all-around detector for most people, winning on features like automatic GPS lockouts, Bluetooth, and better BSM filtering. The R3 is now $329, putting it $70 over the RAD 700i and outside the under-$300 category. For most drivers the RAD 700i is the more practical choice. If you do a lot of driving in challenging terrain and want maximum detection distance, the R3 is worth the premium.

Is the Escort Max 3 worth buying in 2026?

With caveats. The Max 3 dropped to $299 after Escort released the Max 4. The Max 4 does bring real improvements including better filtering and longer range, so the higher price is justified. With the Max 3 getting older, Escort has slowed down on development and doesn’t appear to be addressing some of the remaining performance issues. If you already own one, keep it updated and it will serve you reasonably well. If you are buying new, the RAD 700i is the safer bet.

What do you give up with a radar detector under $300?

Mainly range, filtering, and directional arrows. Higher-end detectors offer significantly more detection range, especially in tricky terrain with hills, curves, and trees. They also detect more photo radar systems and tend to have better filtering overall. Directional arrows, which tell you whether a signal is ahead, beside, or behind you, are a feature you start to see on detectors above this price range, with the first option being the Uniden R7 at $550. Under $300 you get solid everyday protection. Above $300 you get more margin in the situations that matter most.

Is a radar detector under $300 good enough?

For most drivers, yes. In suburban and highway driving against traditional radar guns, a detector like the RAD 700i provides sufficient protection. Where the limitations show up more is in tricky terrain: hilly, wooded, mountainous, or curvy roads where sensitivity becomes critical and higher-end detectors pull meaningfully more distance. If you drive mostly in suburban areas and want good bang for the buck, under $300 is fine. If you do a lot of driving in tricky terrain, spending more gets you a meaningful upgrade. Final Thoughts

The Cobra RAD 700i at $259 is the pick here. It’s a more modern and capable detector that benefits from Escort’s technology, handles daily driving well, and includes the features that make a detector easy to live with. The fact that it’s a Cobra still admittedly surprises me a little.

The Escort Max 3 at $299 would have been a strong recommendation if Escort had finished buttoning it down. At the right price with a fully resolved platform, I would prefer it given its added sensitivity. The price is nice, the detection reliability isn’t.

The Uniden DFR7 was a great value at $199. At $224 it’s harder to justify over the RAD 700i. Uniden raised prices and vacated two sweet spots they used to own, and the RAD 700i stepped into the gap.

The Uniden R3 at $329 remains the range leader in this tier if terrain demands it, but Uniden’s price increase pushed it out of the under-$300 conversation it used to own. You can consider a refurb R3 for $279.

The Whistler CR93 is back on the market at $220 after Goliad Products acquired the brand. It is not competitive. Poor filtering, no GPS lockouts, and the DFR7 outperforms it for $4 more.

Front Camera

The A229 Ultra uses the same 4K Sony Starvis 2 IMX678 sensor as the A229 Pro and A329S. In the launch firmware, its bitrate drops when running 2CH or 3CH, while the A329S maintains a higher bitrate in every mode. The difference is noticeable when recording lots of fine detail such as trees or signs. Viofo has confirmed a firmware update is coming that will keep the Ultra’s front bitrate at full quality in 1CH and 2CH, with only the 3CH bitrate dropping.

The Ultra also supports 60 fps recording in 1CH or 2CH configurations, though in practice this doesn’t provide a major benefit.

Rear Camera

The A229 Ultra has the edge here with a 4K rear camera compared to the A329S’s 2K rear. The extra resolution makes it easier to capture plates or faces from farther away. It does not eliminate motion blur, so moving vehicles will still appear streaky, but the added detail is helpful when incidents happen at a distance.

The Ultra’s USB cables are thicker than the A329S’s coax, making them a little bulkier to route, but the ability to reuse existing A229 wiring is a nice perk if you’re upgrading.

Interior Camera

The A229 Ultra comes with a 1080p ultra wide interior cam while the A329S offers a 2K interior camera. Resolution is less critical for monitoring passengers inside the car since everything is close, but the A329S’s extra detail is useful if you want to capture what’s happening outside your side windows. That makes it the stronger option for rideshare drivers or anyone who prioritizes interior clarity.

The Ultra’s 210° lens also provides excellent coverage of both side windows, but the footage doesn’t capture as much fine detail as the A329S’s sharper 2K interior cam. HDR is always on with the Ultra, while the A329S lets you toggle it, but in practice I find it’s better to leave HDR on anyway. One installation difference worth noting is that the Ultra’s interior cam cable sticks straight out, while the A329S uses a compact 90° connector for a cleaner setup.

Pro tip: If you already run an A229 Plus or Pro, you can order the new ultrawide interior cam separately to upgrade your existing system. The 4K rear cam is not cross-compatible.

Telephoto Options

The A229 Ultra has no telephoto support. If you want a telephoto view, you’ll need one of the A329 variants such as the A329T or A329TC, similar to the telephoto lens for the A229 Plus or A229 Pro to make the A229 Pro Tele. This flexibility is a big advantage for the A329S lineup.

New Parking Modes

The A329S adds some additional parking mode options, specifically the new low power options to give you long term parking recording. Instead of recording for about a day, it can now record for over a week.

The new hybrid parking mode allows you to run the dashcam in one of the traditional parking modes initially and then switch to low power parking mode. This way instead of shutting off altogether, you continue to get extended protection while parked.

Note: Low power parking recording and hybrid parking recording with a timer are available using both the HK4 and HK6 parking mode cables. To use hybrid parking recording and switch modes based on voltage levels of your car battery, you’ll need the HK6. For more info, watch this video.

WiFi File Transfer Speeds

The A329S supports WiFi 6, and in testing transfers are more than three times faster compared to the A229 Ultra. If you regularly download footage to your phone, this is a noticeable upgrade.

Other Features

The A329S also benefits from a more advanced chipset which unlocks additional features that the A229 Ultra does not have:

• Multiplexing: Combine multiple camera views into a single video file, so you can review and share front, interior, and rear angles together instead of juggling separate clips.”

These features make the A329S a more premium, feature-rich platform compared to the A229 Ultra.

Which Dashcam to Buy?

Both the A229 Ultra and A329S deliver excellent video quality, but the A329S is the more premium, feature-rich choice overall. The Ultra is a solid option if you want 4K front and rear with compatibility for existing A229 wiring, while the A329S adds features like higher bitrate recording, sharper interior footage, faster WiFi transfers, telephoto support, and advanced parking modes.

If you’d like a high end dashcam and you don’t need some advanced features like the long term parking recording, multiplexing capability, or SSD support, the A229 Ultra will do the job well. If you want the best overall system, especially in 3CH setups, the A329S is worth the higher price.

Front Camera

From the outside, the A229 Ultra looks nearly identical to the A229 Pro.

The front camera uses the same 4K Sony Starvis 2 IMX678 sensor, so image quality up front is essentially unchanged. That is not a bad thing since the Pro already delivers solid front footage. The main improvements with the Ultra are found in the add-on cameras.

Rear Camera

One of the key upgrades is the jump from 2K to 4K on the rear camera, making the A229 Ultra Viofo’s first 4K front and rear model.

The higher resolution helps capture license plates and faces from slightly farther away. It does not reduce motion blur, so cars passing quickly behind will still show streaks, but overall the added detail is helpful when something happens farther back. Compared to the 2K rear cameras on the A229 Pro or A329S, the Ultra’s rear footage looks a little less contrasty and somewhat hazier, though detail and sharpness remain strong. The case design has also been updated to match the A329S and the rear CPL filter now clips on instead of sticking on with adhesive, which makes it easier to remove later if needed.

Interior Camera

The interior camera also makes a noticeable step forward.

It switches to a 210-degree ultra wide lens which does a much better job of capturing activity through the side windows. This makes it especially useful in situations like side collisions, police encounters, or parking incidents such as door dings and vandalism.

Resolution remains at 1080p, unlike the A329S which offers a 2K interior option, and there is no fisheye mode. Personally I prefer the look of the ultra wide angle so I run that on my A329S anyway. HDR is always enabled on the Ultra’s interior cam, which I am fine with since I typically leave HDR on. One installation quirk is that the USB cable sticks straight out the side instead of using the compact L-shaped connector like the A329S, which may limit mounting options slightly.

The A229 Ultra uses USB C connections for the rear and interior cameras, just like the A229 Plus and Pro, rather than coaxial cables like the A329 series.

This new ultrawide cam is also compatible with the A229 Plus and Pro if you’d like to upgrade to this wider camera. The Ultra’s higher res rear cam is not compatible with the Plus or Pro though.

The A229 Ultra is available in 4 different configurations:

There is no telephoto option. If you want a telephoto lens, the A229 Pro, Plus, or A329T still cover that.

Pricing

Pricing changes often with sales, but here’s where the Ultra currently stands:

• 2CH: About $30 more than the A229 Pro. The 4K rear cam is a small but real upgrade, so for $30 it makes sense if you want the extra clarity.

• 3CH: About $40 more than the Pro on Viofo’s website. For that you get both the 4K rear cam and the wider interior cam. That feels like a very worthwhile upgrade.

Final Thoughts

The A229 Ultra feels less like a brand new dashcam and more like a refinement of the A229 Pro. The front camera is unchanged, but the step up to a 4K rear sensor and the wider interior lens makes the Ultra the more capable package. These upgrades don’t completely transform the experience, but they do give you better coverage and more useful detail in situations where it matters.

For most drivers, the decision comes down to price. The Ultra only costs a little more than the Pro, and in the case of the 3CH version, unless you can pick up the A229 Pro at a solid discount, I think the benefits of the Ultra outweigh the price bump. If you want the option for a telephoto camera, the A229 Pro Tele is still the one to get, but otherwise the Ultra is a stronger choice going forward.

It’s also worth remembering that the Ultra is a brand new release. As with most new Viofo dashcams, there may be some early firmware quirks that get ironed out over time. Based on my initial testing though, the Ultra seems stable and performs pretty well. I’ve only been running it for about a week, but so far it feels like a solid addition to Viofo’s lineup.

In short, if you are deciding between the A229 Pro and Ultra, I would lean toward the Ultra. The price difference is small, and the added coverage makes it the more complete choice.

For off-roading and truck installs, instead of regular rear and interior cams, the Bumper version of the Tripro adds external waterproof front (1080p) and rear (2K) bumper cams in addition to the main 4K cam in the RVM.
