With the mixed reviews I suppose I can hold off for now until next gen or a super deal. My R3 is doing great. Happy holidays to you and your family as well!

I’ve been on the fence for a while. If you had to choose between the Thinkware U1000 (2 Channel) and the Blackvue DR900s-2CH which would you choose? I really like the face I can use the blendmount with the DR900 and i’m not a big fan of the mounting for the U1000. Also any recommendations on a interior facing camera as well? I’d like to have something that records if i’m pulled over by the police (which happens more than i’d like to admit because I live in a small southern town and I drive a sports car).

    1. The U1000 has much better detail and low light sensitivity, high heat tolerance, as well as the low power / long term parked recording capability. The Blackvue has better cloud support and is a few bucks cheaper. If you want a Blendmount option and interior recording, the best compromise will be the DR900S-2CH IR. https://bit.ly/2QWXU

Yep. The arrows aren’t enough to justify the upgrade IMHO. Plus much bulkier case, and the leftward display slant is not preferable for my stealthy location in the corner of the dash at the A-pillar. I still have more range than needed.

I believe if you are spotted with one, the LEO may decide to be privately prejudiced regardless of the law allowing it. They can always find a way to cite someone if they want to bad enough. If you might have gotten by with a warning before they see it, that could easily be the reason they change their mind no matter the reason you were pulled over. I can pull mine down inconspicuously when pulled over.

@Chris I need to find a way to make mine easy to remove. I’m always worried when I get pulled over the police will see me moving around and moving stuff and think i’m hiding drugs or something lol. I have momentary switches i’ve installed my exhaust cutout and sunroof open and close and then latching switches for my fog lights. I’ve thought about installing one for the radar detector but the unit would still be visible. What is needed is a heads up display one. With built in speed and speed limits and all that stuff. My x6 has a hud and I love it. I’d love to build one my self but it’s a little outside my skill set. I could do the programming since i’m a software engineer but the hardware and hud would be to much for me to handle. If anyone is willing to take that up let me know 😉

@Mike that things belongs in a museum lol.

@Andrew I was shocked to see many of those old detectors are up for sale right now on eBay. You’re right. That it would only be a collector’s item with X and K-Bands only. I think I had its older brother or cousin at some point. I think it weighed close to 2 lbs..

With my low-tech setup I can pull it down either by the cord or by picking up the unit. Drop on floorboard and kick it under my seat. Then just unplug the cord and do the same if possible. I have it sitting on one of those sticky pads so it doesn’t move around, but can easily be removed. I also use a black old-school cloth mouse-pad to cover it so no one spots it at a glance in a parking lot. I never store it, as it is not really in plain sight so unlikely to get stolen.

Can I add a third channel to have a outward facing rear camera if I get the 2CH IR?

    1. No, the dashcam only supports two channels. If you want a third channel, you’ll need to run an additional standalone camera.

Best radar detector to use in Australia as technically they are “illegal” and I don’t have a massive budget. Options ?

    1. No idea, sorry. You’d need to ask a fellow Aussie. I focus on the US and Canada. Things are very different around the world.

I need to buy a new Radar detector I am on the road all day .so R7 or Max360c ?

    1. Do you need maximum range? R7. Do you want a more relaxed plug and play experience? Max360c.The 360c has better filtering and autolockouts, but the R7 has better performance, especially in tougher terrains.

I was going to buy the Radenso pro m but now that the xp is $100 off i dont know what to do. I want to wait and see maybe the pro m will drop in price for the holidays. Do you have any suggestions? I live in chicago suburbs. I travel on highway and city.

    1. The Pro M has longer range, better BSM filtering, it’s more compact, and has MRCD/MRCT support. The XP is a lower price of course so it all comes down to if you want to sacrifice a bit to save some cash. Totally your call. Both detectors are great. 🙂

    @Steve,
I imagine your Escort IX falses frequently for K band BSMs. If you wait for a new model to hit, you will be paying top dollar for anything brand new.
Imagine paying $600 for the R7 when it hit. Was it worth that? sure, but now look at the prices. Tech can always be a waiting game and prices drop as the new wears off.

If you decided to upgrade now, nothing is perfect in blocking the falses out. R3 and R7 are better than Escort. So it depends on your location, needs, budget and concern level. No perfect solutions. I have seen Vortex in vids saying that the Radenso models are better than R3 and R7 at blocking K band falses, but that was not my experience for the 2 I tried out a couple years back. Hopefully they have improved since then. The Radensos are also reportedly the best at MRCD detection (speed and stop light cams). So that might be a consideration as well. Canda, NY, and some other states use MRCD.

IMHO, once R7 gets the auto-lockouts firmware update (should have been rolled out a few months ago but maybe there are legal delays), I think it would be the best all around detector for me. Seems there are always good and bad points for each detector and each individual. Good luck!

    • Chris on December 3, 2019 at 3:59 pm
    • Reply

I misspoke a little. I think MRCD is mainly the unmanned vehicles taking pictures, which is a similar concept. Only problem with those is that they are moving from time to time.
